My First Summer at Smirkus

Editor’s Note: This post was written by Camp Photographer & Communications Assistant Elly Craig

This is my very first year at Circus Smirkus, and while I’m here as the photographer and marketing assistant person, I still feel a bit like a camper—excited and full of anticipation to finally arrive at a camp that I dreamed about for much of my life.

I first heard about Smirkus as a kid growing up in rural Wisconsin, and imagined a place where circus-loving kids could be wild, weird, and completely themselves. This summer, I finally get to experience it from behind the scenes—and it’s even more magical than I imagined.

Some things are just as I pictured: the big circus tents, the dedication to learning and training, and the joy that comes from being in such an extraordinary environment. But what I hadn’t fully expected was the heartbeat of this place—the staff. From coaches and counselors to admin, kitchen crew, and riggers, every person here pours so much care, creativity, and attention into each camper’s experience. Their leadership is rooted in humor, compassion, and a deep commitment to creating a space where kids feel safe, celebrated, and free to be fully themselves.

They’re also every bit as weird and wonderful as I hoped. This morning’s staff meeting featured an impromptu revival of a passionate high school graduation speech. Dinner included a heated debate on the merits of hoarding Uno cards. And Banjo, the camp dog, reliably shows up in a different themed outfit to suit various occasions. Every moment here is an opportunity for joy, authenticity, and connection. As someone experiencing this camp for the first time, I just want to say thank you—to the staff, for building such a vibrant and thoughtful community, and to you, the families, for trusting all of us with your incredible kids. It’s a true honor to witness the love, pride, and purpose behind every moment at Circus Smirkus.

With heart,
Elly Craig
