And the Pitch

Greetings all!

It’s hard to believe, but there are precisely 14 more days until “Frontpage Follies: Big Top Big News!” premiers! The troupers are hard at work perfecting their skills in preparation for a spectacular opening day.

A visit to the Academy tent this morning found the hula-hoopers learning choreographed moves for their act. As usual, I was blown away by the amount of effort it takes to control the hula hoops and move in unison. And, of course, they make it look easy….

Emily Gare of Wellington, New Zealand, styles with her hoops.

The big excitement came tonight at Council. Troy, the artistic director and Jesse, the creative director pitched the show to the troupers. “Show pitch” is a run-down – with music samples by our composer and master on the keyboard, Tristan Moore – to give troupers a rough idea of the final production. We promise: This year’s show will not disappoint.  We can’t divulge too many details, but we can tell you that the music pays homage to the 1920s, broadcast news theme songs, and old-time advertising jingles. Newsies, reporters, editors, paparazzi, broadcasters and others will fill the ring to allow audiences to escape to the glory days of journalism — the pre-Internet and cell phone days — when people pored over the morning paper, crowded around the evening radio news report, or stayed awake for the late-night television broadcast to “get the scoop.”

In other news: This evening I am going to introduce you to the 2011 Tour Counselors, Andrew Jones of Chicago, and Danielle Kehlmann of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Andrew and Dani are thrilled to be working with the troupers this summer. As you’ll see, Dani has wanted to be at Smirkus since she saw “Totally Circus” – a 15-part series about Circus Smirkus – on the Disney Channel years ago.
